As many of you will know, I’m attempting to launch a career for myself in ‘serious’ writing. It occurred to me that there should be ways of combining that new direction with Warcraft, in a means that would be accessible to lots of people… and on consideration, this could be the perfect introduction. Therefore today, I am going to launch the inaugural Warcraft Haiku Contest.

In its most traditional sense, a haiku is the juxtaposition of two images or ideas: these are normally separated by a kireji or ‘cutting word’ acting as a verbal punctuation mark. Whilst this is the case in traditional forms, ‘modern’ haiku relies more on the specific structure of this poetic form, namely:

Three lines only, totalling 17 syllables, in the following order:

First line of 5 syllables
Second line of 7 syllables
Third line of 5 syllables

I’ve been writing this form of poetry daily for over a month, and I think I’m getting the hang of it:

Knowing all this, and being well aware of how literary many of my fellow Warcraft players are? A Haiku contest with an Azerothian theme seems like an excellent idea.

Warcraft Haiku Two

The overall winner of the contest will be the haiku that, in my personal opinion most encompasses the spirit and significance of World of Warcraft in haiku form. You can write your haiku about anything found in Azeroth, regardless of Expansion. As long as it complies with the poetic form? That’s fine.

To incentivise you sufficiently, rewards for the top three poems will be are as follows:

OVERALL WINNER: $50 Amazon Voucher
RUNNER UP PRIZES: 2 x $20 Amazon Vouchers
